So, you've got your
new Netmar Webhosting account, and you want to take it for a test drive.
This section will help you get a jumpstart on your webpage, as we see
how to quickly and most effectively take advantage of your new account.
Keep in mind: Most of the material covered in this section can be found
elsewhere, this page serves basically as an outline. This will cover
the most common account type: the 100 meg linux account.
You have read the TERMS
AND CONDITIONS.
You have SIGNED UP
for webhosting.
You will now have your username and your password.
You may want to think about signing up for autobilling and receiving
your $2/month discount. You can find the autobill
form here.
Just fill out the Section B and fax it back to (540) 951-9404 ext 18.
At this point, you have access to Netmar's servers.
You can access your account with instructions from this
page.
To upload files, you will want to use FTP.
Make sure to put your files in the www directory so they will be visible
to the world.
At this point, you can see your
files at: http://homer.netmar.com/~username/
Now, to associate a domain with your account.
We will assume you have already purchased a domain name.
If this is not the case, you may do so through Netmar's domain
registration system.
You must do one of two things to have your domain name point to your
files on Netmar's server:
1.) Email Netmar at staff@netmar.com,
telling us you would like to host your domain, ______, in our domain
name servers. There's a one time $15 fee for this. THEN (and only then),
log into the system from which you purchased your domain name and point
your DNS records to our DNS servers (198.69.224.4 and 198.69.224.5,
or ns.netmar.com and ns2.netmar.com respectively).
or
2.) If you have access to your DNS records (perhaps at the place you
purchased your domain name, or at a previous webhosting company), you
can ask that your DNS entries be pointed to our webserver (198.69.224.10)
and that your mail (MX) entry be pointed at mail.netmar.com. This is
more complicated, and sometimes it's not even an option.
Anyway,
Once you've pointed your DNS entry to our system, it will take at least
8 and not more than 48 hours for your DNS record change to spread throughout
the internet. Some people will begin seeing your files that you have
uploaded to our system immediately, and some will take longer, depending
on the nameservers of their ISP and other factors.
That's it, your domain is now working.
To set up mail: If you'd like to have mail aliased to existing email
addresses (for different people associated with your website) you will
want to take a look at our .aliasmap page.
More information on mail can be found here.
Note that you can create a file on your computer called ".aliasmap"
(dot-aliasmap) and upload it, but sometimes windows doesn't like files
with no file extention (old dos 8.3 notation). At any rate, if you choose
to do this, make sure you put it in your user directory (do not change
to www).
Thank you for choosing Netmar for your webhosting, and have fun!
Sincerely,
Will Dunn
