Some people appreciate the control that comes with a command line, and
wish to make use of a command line prompt to access their Netmar account.
You can connect with two methods: telnet and SSH. Telnet is more common,
but less secure than SSH.
Windows has a built in telnet client. You can access it by going to
the start menu --> run command.
Once you have the run window open, type telnet
barney.netmar.com in the text box. Solaris users (older customers)
will type telnet login.netmar.com.
You will be prompted for for your username and password; enter them
in the correct places. You will then be given your netmar>
prompt.
Another method of logging in to a command line is to use an SSH client.
SSH stands for Secure SHell. Our current favorite SSH client is PuTTY,
which can be found in a variety of locations. One download site for
PuTTY is here: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/
Once you download PuTTY, there isn't a whole lot of configuration to
do. Start up the program, and you will see this screen:
Set your hostname to barney.netmar.com (Solaris customers - older accounts
- set your hostname to login.netmar.com). Click the button for SSH and
notice that your port is automatically set to 22. Then, click open.
After negotiating the contract, PuTTY will open a blank terminal window
with a login and password prompt. Enter your information properly, and
you will be given a netmar> prompt.
